From Memory to Streaming. The Role of Historical Archives in Strengthening Public Television’s OTT in Spain
Synopsis
This study examines how three regional public OTT platforms – 3Cat (Catalonia), AGalega (Galicia), and ETB Plany (Basque Country) – use historical archives to engage audiences. The hypothesis is that archives, especially when presented in co-official languages, help strengthen cultural identity and foster emotional connections through nostalgia. The platforms feature iconic past content in well-organized thematic collections with high visibility. ETB Play stands out for its archival focus and “collective memory” section; 3Cat for its strong editorial curation and social media impact; and AGalega for its broad, accessible offer. Overall, archives emerge as a strategic asset in the digital transformation of regional public broadcasters.
